The Dutch have always used the sea as a means to trade, and successful they were at it. Competing has always been more important than winning, but at the end of the 1980 this changed. With medals in the windsurfer, Europe and Finn dinghy and legs in the Whitbread Round the World Race, winning became the holy grail. This has only grown in the 21st century. Not only in the Olympics, but also with campaigns in the Volvo Ocean Race and sailors standing on the top podium in the America’s Cup. As a sailing nation always hungry for more, persistent and ready to pounce.

The captain of SSL Team Netherlands is known for making success possible. Stepping out of the comfort zone, always improving through understanding why, passionate about personal development and team collaboration, because ‘Success is not a coincidence’, it is a choice.

Team Netherlands does not want to be remembered for there leaders but as THE TEAM with specialists in all the facets required. ‘I am because we are’ describes the level of accountability and trust between team members.
Dirk de Ridder
Dirk de Ridder, a fantastic seat of the pants sailors, a master at trimming sails and understanding the boat handling challenge. Always open to lead by sharing his vast knowledge. Whether at the local club races or in the America’s Cup. A fun loving but determined professional.
Marit Bouwmeester,
Marit Bouwmeester, multiple Olympic, World and European champion, with a total and absolute commitment to work to be the best, to stay the best and inspire team members to become the best. An ambassador for the power of women’s performance sailing.
Carlo Huisman
Carlo Huisman, the powerhouse of Dutch sailing. His huge strength, stamina and commitment is supplemented with vast experience. He is racing at the pinnacle of our sport in the Volvo Ocean Race and America’s Cup.
THE YOUTH FACTOR
The Netherlands have various youth training Academies that will provide the backbone of the team in the years to come. Young sailors who have learned for years from them and are claiming their space in the team for the first edition.
